Family Services of Greater Waterbury eNewsletter - Vol I | Issue I

March 4, 2009

Dear Family Services Friends & Family,

Welcome to Family Services of Greater Waterbury’s first eNewsletter. Did you know that 2009 is our centennial? We are 100 years old! We’re planning a very special Centennial Celebration that will help to increase the community’s awareness of all that we do here at Family Services of Greater Waterbury. We’d like to recognize all of the employees, board members, volunteers, committee members, business partners, and community leaders who make our work possible. Our year long festivities will highlight the many programs that we offer and will help to raise funds for operations, capital needs, infrastructure, and endowment.

Family Services of Greater Waterbury will be hosting three major centennial events in 2009:

  • A wine tasting at the Timexpo Museum on May 7th
  • Diana Krall in concert at the Palace Theater on June 5th
  • A Masquerade Gala at the Aqua Turf on October 29th

Since our earliest days when we were known as Associated Charities, our goal has always been to meet the needs of those we serve with a level of excellence and respect. Today we manage the Chapman House a safe home, for abused and/or neglected children. We also offer counseling services for those facing various life issues, and operate the Jobs First Employment Services Program for people who are seeking work.

Last year alone, we touched 10,000 lives. We have grown to six locations and are determined to meet the growing needs of the 43 communities we serve. We have developed a bold vision for our future, so that during our next hundred years, we will touch even more lives.

Please give us your feedback about this eNewsletter. Its purpose is to open up a dialogue with the community and to share all of our happenings here at Family Services of Greater Waterbury. But we can’t do this alone, so please email us; we’d love to hear from you! Feel free to submit your comments, ideas, suggestions, and personal stories of struggles or triumphs. Tell us what Family Services of Greater Waterbury means to you. Have you volunteered with us, and found it a fulfilling experience? Do you want to learn how to help others in need? Or are you looking for some assistance yourself? Do you have a fantastic recipe to share, or maybe it’s an article about your favorite stress-reducing hobby? Please submit all articles by the 15th of each month for consideration in the next issue. And don’t forget, forward this eNewsletter to your family and friends to help us spread our mission.

I encourage you to join with us as we celebrate a century of service to those facing life’s challenges.

Sincerely,

Sandy Porteus, LCSW
Executive Director

Family Services' Centennial Celebration promises to brighten 2009 with three exciting events. . . a wine tasting on May 7th, a concert at the Palace Theater on June 5th featuring Diana Krall (a Grammy Award winning jazz singer), and a Masquerade Gala at the Aqua Turf on October 29th. In keeping with our commitment to excellence in all we do, our Centennial Celebration events will give our donors and other friends high quality, high value. . .

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”
~ Elizabeth Andrew

This quote perfectly describes the many talented volunteers who give their time and ability here at Family Services of Greater Waterbury. From our dedicated board members to those who rock our babies, we reap the benefits of overflowing hearts. Now, more than ever, our agency is using volunteers. . .

Family Services of Greater Waterbury is proud to announce their participation in a special program called Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy training. Family Services was one of four Connecticut agencies that was awarded the grant through the Department of Children and Families and is currently training seven staff members in this innovative treatment model. This therapeutic intervention is designed to help children. . .

These are unprecedented times for many families. For the past three to four months we have experienced a significant increase in requests for services and many of these calls are from people who have never needed our help in the past. The current economic downturn has wreaked havoc for so many. After all, how many of us are just a few paychecks away from being in a financial crisis? How prepared are most people. . .

For 100 years Family Services of Greater Waterbury has brought strength and hope to tens of thousands of children and families who have faced life's struggles and have overcome them. Here are some examples of the work that we do every day: 5-year-old Mary who came to our safe home, the Chapman House. She was suffering from abuse and neglect, but left healed and looking forward to the next chapter of her life. . .
